Videos: Posterior Nasal Packing (or Stopping a Bad Rear Nose Bleed)

by James Hubbard, MD, MPH

These videos, courtesy YouTube users, demonstrate parts of the procedures I describe in “When Your Nose Won’t Stop Bleeding: Causes and Cures.” As I say there, don’t try this at home unless you really, really have to. The procedures can be dangerous. See that post for warnings. The videos, which I’ve clipped from their full-length versions, are not meant to stand alone.

Inserting a Tube Into the Nose

This shows how to insert a nasogastric (NG) tube, but you’d insert a Foley catheter (as described my previous post) the same way. One difference is that in this video, their purpose is to get the tube into the stomach. For a nose bleed, you won’t go that far.

Makeshift Posterior Nasal Packing (With Gauze)

Here, you can see part of the alternate cloth or gauze procedure I described in the previous post.
